Every journey has a beginning. For Bishop Oscar E. Brown, that beginning was a call that would shape not only his life, but generations of lives at First Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church. In the premiere episode of Stability in the Storm: A Story of Faith, Grace and Pastoring First Mt. Olive, Bishop Brown takes us back to the beginning—before the title, before the 40 years, and before he knew just how much saying “yes” would require. He reflects on his early life, his call to ministry, becoming pastor of First Mt. Olive just 13 days after marrying Lady Jacqueline D. Brown, and navigating the victories, challenges, and growing pains of his earliest years in pastoral leadership. It is the story of a young husband, a young pastor, a growing church—and an assignment that would ultimately become his life’s work.

Stability in the Storm | Episode 2: “Tested by Fire”

What happens when the place you call home is suddenly gone? In July 2007, lightning struck the steeple of First Mt. Olive’s Fremont & Saratoga church home. Bishop Oscar E. Brown stood outside and watched the building burn.

But the story that followed would prove that the Church was always bigger than the building.

In Episode 2 of Stability in the Storm, Bishop Brown revisits one of the most difficult seasons in First Mt. Olive’s history—from the devastation of the fire to worshipping at Temple Oheb Shalom and Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, keeping a congregation united without a permanent home, and carrying the enormous responsibility of rebuilding while continuing to pastor. He reflects on what it meant to lead through uncertainty, the personal weight of that season, the faith required when the finish line seemed far away, and the journey that eventually led First Mt. Olive to the Rehoboth Campus.

It is a story of loss, resilience, community and a faith that survived the fire.

Stability in the Storm | Episode 3: “Empowering People to Wholeness”

In Episode 3 of Stability in the Storm, the conversation turns to the vision that has shaped First Mt. Olive for generations: Empowering People to Wholeness.

Bishop Brown reflects on what wholeness means, developing ministers and leaders, pastoring multiple generations of families, and watching people discover their gifts, their calling, and who God created them to be. The conversation also revisits another defining test of leadership: the COVID-19 pandemic. Bishop Brown shares what it was like to preach to an almost empty sanctuary, battle COVID himself, and lead a congregation that had to discover new ways to worship, pray, connect, and care for one another while physically apart.

Through changing seasons, one thing remained constant: the mission was never simply to fill a church. It was to build people. This is the vision. This is Empowering People to Wholeness. Forty years later, what remains when you look back at the journey?

The final episode of Stability in the Storm brings Bishop Oscar E. Brown’s story full circle. After revisiting the call, the fire, the rebuilding, the vision, and the seasons that shaped First Mt. Olive, Bishop Brown reflects on the people and the grace that helped sustain him through four decades of pastoral leadership.

He speaks about the role of Lady Jacqueline D. Brown, raising a family while pastoring, watching the next generation step into ministry, the hardest decisions and greatest joys of leadership, and the relationship between a pastor and the church he has served for 40 years.

But this conversation isn’t only about looking back.

Bishop Brown also looks toward what is still ahead—what he believes God is calling First Mt. Olive to do next, what continues to motivate him to lead, and the legacy he hopes this ministry will carry long after him. And finally, we return to the question that began this entire series: Who is Oscar Eugene Brown? After 40 years of faith, sacrifice, storms, victories, growth, family, ministry and grace…perhaps the answer means something different now.
